Pirate Athletics > Athletic Director

MICK WILSON, Athletic Director

Mick Wilson is in his third year as the Athletic Director and fifth overall at Independence Community College. Wilson has brought many changes to the ICC athletic department including facility and weight room improvements and the addition of new sports such as soccer, golf, cheer & dance. The establishment of corporate memberships has generated a sizable financial impact on an already successful Pirate Booster Club. Wilson brings knowledge, experience and a solid reputation in athletics to ICC. As the Director of Athletics, Wilson supervises 11 varsity programs and has the assignment of leading the Pirate athletic department in a positive and progressive direction. Wilson made his return to Independence in 2005 and previously served as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach from 2001-2003.

Wilson spent 2003-2005 as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Henderson State University (NCAA II) in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Reddies enjoyed two successful seasons, capturing the Gulf South Conference West Division Championship and reaching the NCAA Division II South Regional semifinals in 2004.

Mick Wilson was Independence Community College’s 19th Head Men’s Basketball Coach from 2001-2003. In 2002, he led ICC to a third place finish in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Pirates also qualified for postseason play by hosting a first round playoff game and advancing to the Region VI Tournament quarterfinals in Salina.

Prior to ICC, Wilson spent the 2000-2001 season as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Sterling College (NAIA) in Sterling, Kansas. Wilson took over a dismal program and promptly led the Warriors to their best season in eight years. The Warriors qualified for postseason play and also had victories over several nationally ranked opponents.

Before becoming the Head Coach at Sterling College, Wilson served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Henderson State University where he earned his Master’s Degree. During the 1999-2000 season, HSU compiled a 25-10 record and won the Gulf South Conference Championship. The Reddies also earned a berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Prior to joining the staff at Henderson State, Wilson coached in the high school ranks for nine years compiling a 134-59 record. Most recently, Wilson was the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at East Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the 1997-1998 season, East Central advanced to the quarterfinals of the class 5A Oklahoma State Tournament. In 1998, he led East Central to a third place finish in the prestigious Tulsa Schoolboy Tournament of Champions. During the 1998-1999 season, Wilson guided East Central to the Eastland Conference Championship and was named Tulsa Coach of the Year.

Before his tenure at East Central, Wilson was the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, Kansas. The Purple Dragons, which had been a SEK Conference doormat, quickly improved from a 6-14 record in Wilson’s first year at the helm to a 21-4 record in his final season. The Dragons won the Burlington Invitational Tournament in 1996 and again in 1997. During his final season (1996-1997) at Pittsburg High, the Purple Dragons advanced to the class 5A Kansas State Finals by defeating defending state champion McPherson High School. The victory snapped McPherson’s streak of eight straight 5A Kansas State Finals appearances. Pittsburg finished as the 5A Kansas State Runner-up to Blue Valley North.

Wilson began his head coaching career at Welch High School (class A) in Welch, Oklahoma. He led the Wildcats to several tournament and district championships.

Wilson is a 1983 graduate of Quapaw High School (OK). He earned his Associate of Arts degree from Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College in Miami, Oklahoma. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas and a Master of Science degree from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Wilson is one of four children raised in Quapaw, Oklahoma. He is Native American and a member of the Quapaw Tribe. Wilson is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Independence and a member of the Independence Optimist Club. Wilson also serves on the Board of Directors for the Independence Chamber of Commerce and has been a featured speaker at many group events including Upward Bound, Rotary and Lions Club. Wilson's past achievements include, Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Achievement Award for 15 years and the 2007 ICC Spirit Award for outstanding community service. Wilson is married to Jeanne Aust of Tulsa, Oklahoma and they have twins, a daughter Sheridan and a son Parker.
