Independence Community College’s homecoming was a success all around.  Karaoke, roller-skating and Color wars all found their way into the calendar of events for the week.  The fun culminated in a rousing defeat of Ft. Scott on Saturday.  The traditional homecoming dance, which brought in an impressive 127 dancers, wrapped the week up in fitting style.

“Overall,” commented Patrick Brown, the new Residence Life Director for ICC, “I think it was just a phenomenal week.” On Friday night, ICC’s pregame pep-rally was another phenomenal showing as a totally student organized event went over smoothly.  Brown added “It was a heck of a job to in a week.”

Saturday night the entire crowd was behind the blue and gold team as they led the game at half time.  Even science instructor Dr. Mona Saleh, another of ICC’s new faculty members, “I’m trying to find out why I should watch,” she commented when asked her opinion of her first “American Football” game.  “When they do something right, I feel it.”

“The Pirates were better before the game,” said Dr. Judith Hansen, ICC President, in support of the team, “and it’s clear they’ve proven it so.”

At halftime, ICC crowned Cedric Ownens and Dana-Mae Robbs homecoming king and queen.

Another of ICC’s newest family members, the drum line made a very impressive showing during their second performance.  “I’m very proud of them” said Chris Langsford, ICC’s choir instructor.  Richard Tirk commented about the job Brian Shelton, ICC’s new adjunct percussion instructor, and student Kareem Pickering have been doing in the month since school has started.  “Those two guys have done the brunt of the work (organizing the drumline).”  Tirk said Thursday, “it was fantastic what they [did].”

At other colleges and universities, with large attendance figures, many events are booked, but students may not show up.  Its different at ICC, finished Brown, “Here, you give [students] something to do, they respond.”
