Volleyball Team Making Waves In Jayhawk Conference
By Justin Loomis, Buccaneer staff writer

With all the sports that happen every fall at Independence Community College, we seem to forget that there are those sports that will put our school on the map. With the fact that our football team is rebuilding, people seem not to realize that we have another fall sport that is building a legacy of its own. That sport is volleyball.

Now before you turn to the next page, just hear me out. Volleyball hasn’t been the most popular sport in the past, but the fact that it is gaining a head of steam should make you think twice about the sport.

As of the time this article was written, the volleyball team was 14-3, and making a name for themselves in the Jayhawk Conference. When head coach of the women’s volleyball team, Erin Brown, was asked where her players came from, it is intriguing at how far they came just to play volleyball in America. Two of her sophomores are from Brazil. Now anyone who has half a brain about the not so long removed Olympic Games should remember that Brazil is always a powerhouse in women’s volleyball. The fact that Coach Brown can attract such talent from such a hot bed for the sport of volleyball should make you want to catch a few games.

Most coaches are a little more reserved when talking about conference titles, but not Coach Brown. She knows that in order to win, you must motivate your players to win. Her demeanor alone exudes winning. Plus she isn’t afraid to tell you that her girls are going to be in thick of things come playoff time.

So, what makes this team so special? Maybe it is the fact the team is built around four sophomores that dominate the court every time they put on kneepads. Or maybe it is that Coach Brown is using her resources here in the state of Kansas to recruit players. But maybe what makes this team so special is that only four players on her team are sophomores and the bulk of her talent will return next year.

Are you still waiting to see a legacy? You have one in your own back yard. Maybe we should stop complaining about what we don’t have and start supporting what we do have. This team is for real and we all need to be a part of this new tradition at ICC. There is life after football, you know!
