The College

Independence
Community College (ICC) is located in Independence, Kansas,
a community of over 11,000 with outstanding cultural and
recreational opportunities available to the citizens of this
area. ICC has been serving southeast Kansas since 1925 and
has a long history of academic success and athletic
achievement. ICC has a three-time winner of the NJCAA
National Basketball Championship and is home to the
nationally prominent William Inge Theatre Festival.

Originally
part of the Independence public school district, the college
was legally separated from the district in 1965 with the
passage of the Kansas Community Junior College Law. A bond
issue was passed in 1968 to build a new college campus on
the site formerly occupied by the Independence Country Club.
Construction of the new campus began in the summer of 1969
and was completed in the summer of 1970. The buildings were
occupied for the first time in September 1970.
Located
on a beautiful 68-acre campus, the college includes the
Administration Building, Fieldhouse, Living Center Complex,
Student Union, Academic Building, Cessna Learning Center,
Fine Arts Building and William Inge Theatre, athletic and
physical education practice fields, and a lake. Located off
campus in downtown Independence are the ICC School of
Cosmetology, the Adult Education Success Center, and the
Safety, Health, and Wellness offices. There are over 150
full-time and part-time faculty at ICC and the
student/faculty ratio is 15:1.
The
college reaches over 3,000 students annually through its
programs, courses, and services. ICC has outreach locations
serving Altoona, Buffalo, Cherryvale, Elk City, Elk Falls,
Fredonia, Howard, Independence, Longton, Moline, Neodesha,
Peru, and Sedan. Classes are scheduled so that area
residents may fulfill their educational objectives, whether
they are pursuing a degree program or upgrading specific
skills.
